WikipediaWikipedia ("wiki" for short) is a wonderful resource. It has almost 3 million articles, written entirely by volunteers, and the level of quality is remarkably high. However... you get what you pay for. The resource attracts a lot of people who want to do a good thing, but it also attracts: + Nit-pickers. Some people live to nit-pick. They can't create anything so they nitpick everybody else's efforts. As an example, look at this wiki entry for The Gunfight at the OK Corral. The article was wonderfully written by Dr. Steven B. Harris -- take it from me, I'm right in the middle of all of this controversy! If you look at the discussion, tho, you will find a series of nits. Nothing good... just nits, and patient explanations by the author. Kudos from me to Dr. Harris! + Bozos. In the software biz (I was a software engineer and lecturer for 30 years) we have Bozos. When you discover that someone is really a Bozo, you "turn on their Bozo Bit." The problem with Wiki is, you don't have enuf experience with people to recognize that they're Bozos. Of course, on the Internet, entire sites may be built by one or more Bozos (they tend to flock and nest) and they spread bullshit far and wide. Beware. (Hell, this may be one!) + Shills. On my first site, BelizeNorth, I wrote three or four megabytes about Belize, accompanied by hundreds of pictures and links. It is still one of the most heavily visited non-commercial sites about Belize. However, because I was critical of some government policies, I was boycotted by most of the Belize-based sites. (This was an organized boycott -- it happened in a matter of weeks.) A group of GOB (Government Of Belize) shills had taken over the Wiki site about Belize, and they deleted any pointers I put on that entry to my site. They were supported by the "Wiki Nazis" -- who enforce a set of wiki rules ruthlessly. I'm sue that these nazis will boycott this site as well. Finally... I use Wiki a lot. But... again... you get what you pay for. Here's a site that makes dreadful fun of Wiki.
