What Happened to Westerns in the 70's?

If you look at my list of favorites, you will find very few Westerns from the 70's.  I just bought and watched Lawman, and wow, was that depressing.  Not a fave.

Here's a thoughtful piece by Roger Ebert... a review of The Searchers.   It gives some clues to what happened to the Western.  (I just borrowed The Searchers from the library and watched it again.  It's REALLY depressing.

Here's another clue.  Blazing Saddles came out in 1974.  It was a big success.  Maybe people were getting tired of thoughtful, psychological westerns.  Maybe they wanted cartoons, or maybe a return to the mythic west that Tombstone represents now.
